What You'll Learn
- Understand the React Native and Expo ecosystem — how cross-platform mobile development works and how apps run natively on Android and iOS
- Build mobile UI layouts using React Native's core components — View, Text, Image, ScrollView, FlatList, TextInput, TouchableOpacity, and Pressable
- Apply mobile-first design principles using StyleSheet, Flexbox, responsive dimensions, and platform-specific styling for polished native-feeling UIs
- Implement multi-screen mobile navigation using React Navigation — Stack Navigator, Tab Navigator, Drawer Navigator, and nested navigation patterns
- Manage local and global application state using React hooks and Zustand for scalable, maintainable mobile app architecture
- Fetch and display data from REST APIs in React Native — handling loading states, errors, pagination, and pull-to-refresh interactions
- Access native device hardware and features using Expo APIs — camera, image picker, location services, push notifications, and local storage
- Build beautiful mobile animations and gesture interactions using React Native Animated and React Native Gesture Handler
- Implement mobile-specific UX patterns — modals, bottom sheets, swipeable lists, skeleton loaders, haptic feedback, and adaptive theming
- Build and submit a complete React Native application to the Google Play Store and Apple App Store using Expo EAS Build
Learn by Doing
What You'll Build
Throughout this course, students build a progressive series of mobile projects that grow in complexity at every stage. Mini-projects include: a mobile UI component showcase demonstrating core React Native components and styling, a multi-screen task manager with AsyncStorage persistence, a news reader app fetching live data from a public API with infinite scroll, and a camera and photo gallery app using Expo Image Picker. The capstone project is a complete, multi-screen React Native mobile application of the student's choice — built to production quality and submitted to both the Google Play Store (via an internal test track) and Apple TestFlight. The capstone application must include at minimum five distinct screens with full navigation, REST API integration with live data, global state management, at least two native device API integrations (such as camera, location, or push notifications), full light and dark mode support, polished animations and transitions, and an Expo EAS production build. Students will present their completed apps to the class running live on physical or simulated devices, demonstrating the full user journey through the application they have built from scratch over 16 weeks.
