About the Course
Highly Practical
What You'll Learn
- Understand how the server side of web and mobile applications works — the request-response cycle, HTTP methods, status codes, and REST principles
- Build backend servers and RESTful APIs using Node.js and the Express framework with clean, maintainable route and controller architecture
- Design and manage relational databases using PostgreSQL — writing SQL queries, designing schemas, managing relationships, and using migrations
- Use MongoDB and Mongoose for NoSQL document storage — modelling data for flexible, schema-less application requirements
- Implement secure user authentication and authorisation using JWT tokens, bcrypt password hashing, and role-based access control
- Handle file uploads, image processing, and cloud media storage with Multer and Cloudinary
- Send transactional emails and SMS notifications using third-party providers including Nodemailer, SendGrid, and Termii
- Build real-time features using WebSockets and Socket.io for live chat, notifications, and collaborative application features
- Integrate Nigerian payment gateways — Paystack and Flutterwave — into backend systems for transaction processing and webhook handling
- Deploy production backend applications to the cloud using Railway, Render, and AWS — with CI/CD pipelines, Docker containers, and environment management
Learn by Doing
What You'll Build
Throughout this course, students build a series of progressively complex backend projects that directly demonstrate real-world engineering competence. Mini-projects built during the course include: a fully documented REST API with CRUD operations and PostgreSQL persistence, a user authentication system with JWT, refresh tokens, email verification, and password reset, a file upload API with Cloudinary integration, and a real-time chat server using Socket.io. The capstone project is a complete, production-ready backend API for a multi-feature application of the student's choice — a marketplace, fintech platform, e-commerce system, social app, or similar product relevant to the Nigerian digital economy. The capstone backend must include a well-designed relational or document database schema, a comprehensive REST API with full CRUD operations across multiple resources, secure JWT-based authentication with role-based access control, at least one payment gateway integration (Paystack or Flutterwave), file upload capability with cloud storage, email notification workflows, input validation and error handling, API documentation using Swagger/OpenAPI, a full suite of automated API tests using Jest and Supertest, and a live production deployment accessible via a public URL. Students will present their backend systems in a structured technical review, demonstrating live API calls, explaining architectural decisions, and walking through their database schema and codebase as a professional backend engineer would.
