Mini-projects built during the course include: a fully documented REST API with CRUD operations and PostgreSQL persistence, a user authentication system with JWT, refresh tokens, email verification, and password reset, a file upload API with Cloudinary integration, and a real-time chat server using Socket.io. The capstone project is a complete, production-ready backend API for a multi-feature application of the student's choice — a marketplace, fintech platform, e-commerce system, social app, or similar product relevant to the Nigerian digital economy. The capstone backend must include a well-designed relational or document database schema, a comprehensive REST API with full CRUD operations across multiple resources, secure JWT-based authentication with role-based access control, at least one payment gateway integration (Paystack or Flutterwave), file upload capability with cloud storage, email notification workflows, input validation and error handling, API documentation using Swagger/OpenAPI, a full suite of automated API tests using Jest and Supertest, and a live production deployment accessible via a public URL. Students will present their backend systems in a structured technical review, demonstrating live API calls, explaining architectural decisions, and walking through their database schema and codebase as a professional backend engineer would.
